Mt William, The Grampians

Was debating weather to document this walk as it was short and on a bitumen road but felt it was worthy as the views were as good as any I had seen.
It was the Australia Day weekend and we were on a family break to Halls Gap. We had done a few of the local attractions including McKenzie Falls which was awesome, fast flowing and very picturess.
On the morning we were leaving we decided to have a look at the tallest mountain in the Grampians, Mt William, standing almost 1200mt above see level.
We parked in the car park about 2km from the summit and started our walk. The group included myself, wife Tam, our 2 kids Bethany and Baxter with my sister Rebecca, hubby Brent and their 2 kids Annabelle and Wes.
The first part of the walk was quite strenuous and took a bit out of the kids but they did really well and pushed on great, especially the 2 boys who are 5 and 6 yo.
As we got higher the walk got easier and it took us near on an hour to reach the top with a few rest break and photo opportunities.
As we reached to 2 large towers on top of the mountain we walked around the back to find the summit cairn where we stopped for a break and took in the amazing views of the Grampians and its rugged mountain range. The weather couldn't have been better.
As we made our way down there were quite a few tired looking tourist making their way up. With a few walk in the high country I would have to say the views from this walk would equal any I have seen. I would be keen to do it again.

  1. I've heard that the views from Mt William are incredible, but only spoiled by the transmission towers.

Been considering a walk from Mt William across the Major Mitchell Plateau soon, apparently the summit of Durd Durd is an amazing place, and a complete contrast to Mt William, with its lack of transmission towers.

  2. you are right Ryan, the bitumen road and the telephone poles on the way up were a bit disappointing, hard to take a photo without wires in the back ground, but the views were great, worth it. Our next major walk will be in April, a 4 day hike in the Bogong region to try and find Cairn Creek hut, failed last time. thanks for reading my blog, didnt think anyone did.
