Wye River Falls

The Otways National Park. One of the most beautiful places you can visit as a hiker. Only a few hours from Melbourne but once you drop deep into the lush terrain its like you’re in another world.
Kev as our hike leader was keen to take us deep into the beautiful Wye River to try and locate the Wye Fall.

After we had arrived about 9 am we packed up, doublecheck the map and we were off. The plan for this hike was to set up a bit of a base camp, load up a day pack and go and explore. I was very happy with this decision as trying to carry a 20 kg pack through the dense forest of the Otways is very difficult.

The walk in was great, really green and easy-going as it was a slow decline on an overgrown four-wheel-drive track.
The one thing that was starting to come to our attention is the next couple of days we are going to be wet but only with light rain predicted but everything underfoot was soaked.
It wasn’t long before we had hit a beautiful spot next to a nice flowing creek that would be perfect to sit camp.

The spot was amazing we couldn’t have picked a better location to set up camp. Everything was wet but we all had our cookers and a tarp to set up if it was going to rain. We set camp, made a coffee and then head out for the afternoon just to explore the area.

This place is amazing, it felt so remote and dense and it didn’t matter what direction we walked it was full of beauty. We spent the afternoon just wondering around before heading back to camp to cook up some dinner and crack open the port.

We had a great night, some nice food and port, and a few laughs. The rain set in but that was okay, we were all warm and had a good sleep ready for the day ahead tomorrow.
The light rain pretty much didn’t settle but that was okay. We woke, cooked up some breakfast, had a nice coffee and grab that day packs ready for a big day ahead.

We walked a few hours along fairly well maintained four-wheel-drive track until we come to an orange marker and a single trail that led us down into the Wye River

The walk down to the creek was really cool, a well defined single trail with markers to lead the way. There was section near the bottom that had a rope as a guide to navigate a very steep decline.
One we hit the river we were in another world. This place was amazing.

The sound of the water as we made our way along the river was almost deafening. We snaked our way ever so slowly crossing the river countless times making our feet wetter than my tears when the Hawks lose a grand final.
We continued along at snails pace for a good couple of kilometres but it felt like a marathon.

This river and gorge was like nothing else, I’ve never felt more secluded from the outside world, simply amazing.

After want felt like a lifetime we finally made it to Wye falls, soaked to the bone but this place was stunning.
We stopped briefly for some food but the rain had set in so moving was our only option.

Theses falls were like most on the Otways, beautiful. I shot more video that pictures, but the sound and colours and the remoteness of where we were was stunning.
Kev of course wanted to continue up some cliff and explore more but the day was getting on and we head a 20km walk back to camp.

We arrived back at camp late arvo, was nice to get some dry cloths on and get some warm food into the belly.

What a great few days spent in an amazing part of the world.
This place needs a lot more of my time, can’t wait to get back there.
